Babywearing After a Cesarean Birth

April is International Cesarean Awareness Month, a cause close to my own heart after two cesarean births.

In Australia the cesarean rate was at 32.9% in 2009 and with a high percentage of new mums wanting to reap the benefits of wearing their new squishies I often see the following questions asked;

'can I babywear after a cesarean'

'when can I wear after a cesarean'

'how do I wear after a cesarean'.

The answer to the first question is yes absolutely. Babywearing isn't limited to those women that have vaginal births. When depends entirely on you and your recovery. Always get the OK from your care provider first, but, generally as soon as you are able to walk about and hold your baby whilst standing you can wear your baby. Baby wearing may even help you more than you think. It leaves your hands free for the important little tasks you need them for and if you are wearing your child in an optimal carrier it will also support your back and help you maintain proper posture- helping your recovery.

Of course though, in those first few days after having a baby you should try to stay snuggled in bed with them! Wearing can be useful here too, especially on a busy bright hospital ward. You can place your newborn baby in a carrier and recline on your hospital bed with your hands free knowing they are safe and close. It's an excellent way to do some kangaroo care and skin to skin also.

How to wear is personal. I love using ring slings with newborn babies and carried my youngest child out of hospital after her birth in a ring sling. Whatever carrier you choose make sure it is supportive for you. You don't want any extra strain or stresses on your body when recovering from birth. So a ring sling or woven wrap is perfect as these adjust to the wearer and wearee. Make sure the carry is high and tight far away from your incision. Listen to your body. If moving around only wear for as long as you feel able. If you start to feel niggles rest. Babywearing is a great way for dad to bond and have skin to skin cuddles too. Often you newborn will fall asleep safe with dad allowing you some extra rest.
